Commercial fisherman, oyster farmers, recreational boaters, seaweed aquaculturists, sail boats, all turned out in numbers that were astounding. \n\nFolks have a myriad of concerns over the project. Some are worried about the potential environmental impacts of an industrial salmon farm. Some are concerned about the project being proposed in an area filled with lobster traps. Others see a foreign company taking advantage of Maine\u2019s clean waters to extract wealth as a bad precedent to set for how aquaculture looks in the future. Almost all are worried about what 120 acres of salmon pens will do to the natural beauty of the bay and its proximity to Acadia National Park.\n\nSome feel that this is just NIMBYism. It isn\u2019t. Aquaculture projects are alive and well on the bay, and supported by many of the participants in this protest. Didn\u2019t quite expect to see this on Reddit this morning.\n\nIt\u2019s a multi-faceted answer, so bear with me.\n\nFirst and foremost, the biggest fear for myself and every other sea farmer on the bay is a system failure. AA claims they\u2019ll be building a discharge free system, but their application on the DMR website shows they\u2019re really just wrapping a plastic sheet around the pens and pumping water out through filters. It\u2019s a method that is not allowed in Norway, and also hasn\u2019t been done successfully at scale. It doesn\u2019t engender confidence for those of us who rely heavily on the water quality and ecosystem of the bay. They want to put these pens pretty much in the center of the bay, and with the amount of water movement we get here even a minor failure could have huge consequences.\n\nThat\u2019s the material fear. But there are others. This region relies heavily on tourism, and much of that tourism comes in the form of Acadia visitors. A 120 acre industrial farm in the center of the view shed from Cadillac is enough of a concern that the superintendent of the Park has made a public statement opposing the plan. For my part, eco-tourism is a portion of my business, and one of the things people seem to enjoy the most on farm tours is the idyllic state of the bay. A huge industrial farm in the center of it will certainly have an impact.\n\nAnother threat is what this kind of operation means for the future of aquaculture in Maine. Warming waters and changing conditions means that aquaculture is going to play a serious role in the future of Maine\u2019s economy. I deeply love Maine\u2019s connection to the sea and our tradition of working waterfront, and I very much want to see us find solutions that will keep this way of life alive. Shellfish and sea vegetable farms are environmentally healthy and sustainable ways to grow food in the ocean, and are not remotely as extractive as commercial fishing. They also require almost no inputs, as the shellfish and sea vegetables don\u2019t require feeding or anti-disease measures.\n\nFin fish farming at sea requires massive amounts of inputs, and in an age where we have figured out how to farm them on land in recirculating aquaculture systems like are being proposed in Belfast, Bucksport, and Jonesport, exposing our waters to more of these operations is, frankly, just stupid. A better option exists, and that\u2019s where we should be focusing.\n\nLast but not least, as aquaculture becomes a clearer answer to the \u201cfood production in a time of climate change\u201d question, our clean waters and protected coastline are going to be sought after by corporations and investors from other places looking to use our water to extract profits. We once protected our lobster fishery from that through the \u201cone boat, one license\u201d model, and if we\u2019re any smart we need to find a similar solution in regards to aquaculture. What certainly is NOT a good idea is letting a foreign company set up a large unproven system to farm fin fish in an outdated manner.\n\nETA: They also approached this whole project in the exact wrong way. No community outreach, no relationship building with current bay users, hell, no research of any kind it seems. It\u2019s managed to piss a lot of folks off and is giving the term \u201caquaculture\u201d a bit of a negative connotation around here. For those of us who have been responsibly farming for some time here, that\u2019s worrisome. There are some powerful entities in the state working on behalf of wealthy landowners who are worried about their views and property values who are more than happy to leverage this issue in a larger fight to hamstring aquaculture writ large.
