It also paints a relatively accurate picture of the demographics of the area, allowing units to focus not so much on raids for intelligence, which alleviates possible civilian casualties and more importantly allows units to act in a more friendly fashion. If there is worry this will be used for targeting, well, that's for certain. These teams allow the real bad dudes to be separated from civilians and dealt with accordingly. By bad dudes I mean the type who cannot be convinced to come in out of the cold. Human Terrain teams can however shed light on who is on the fence, and therefore who can be approached instead of killed. All in all, these teams are good both US efforts and Afghan civilians.
